GWYNDAF AND HOWARD: FOR ONE (RALLY)DAY ONLY
One of rallying’s most endearing partnerships will be rekindled at this year’s Rallyday as Gwyndaf Evans and Howard Davies entertain what’s tipped to be a sell-out crowd at Castle Combe on Saturday September 17.
The Welsh pair won the British Rally Championship title together in 1996. But their stories go way beyond a single season aboard a Ford Escort RS2000.
Gwyndaf will bring his stunning Viking Motorsport Ford Escort RS1800 to help remind fans why he was once one of the world’s foremost rally drivers. Howard will bring his spectacular memory and stunning ability to amuse.
Gwyndaf said: “It’s always a real pleasure to go to Rallyday. I don’t think there’s another event like it in Britain which brings the hardcore rally fans together with some of the sport’s most spectacular cars.
“I have no doubt this year’s going to be another classic in terms of the cars coming and it’s going to be great to see the Escort in and among them. It’s also a really nice opportunity to meet old friends and to catch up and reminisce a little bit.
“Talking is what Howard’s very, very good at. When we were in the car together competing, he was obviously the one doing all the talking and telling me where to go. Not much has changed really. I fully expect he’ll be telling me exactly what to do and where to go on Saturday September 17!”
Howard has one of the most recognisable and widely appreciated voices in the sport. Every year he brings smiles to the faces of the Rallyday masses and September will be no different.
“Having Gwyndaf at Rallyday will be great,” said Howard. “Like you can imagine, there are so many memories and so many things to talk about from the time we were working together. Winning the championship in ’96 and competing at what was one of the most amazing times in the BRC is something special.
“We’ll have a laugh, we’ll have a good chat while we’re there, but I’m not getting back in the car with him. Definitely not.”
One man who will be watching Rallyday with interest is Gwyndaf’s son Elfyn. Runner-up in the World Rally Championship for the last two years, the Toyota Gazoo Racing star is disappointed to be missing Castle Combe on September 17.
“I was really looking forward to Rallyday this year,” said Elfyn. “With not having a WRC round in the UK now, we really miss catching up with a lot of people we’d normally see on Rally GB. Rallyday’s great for that and great for the action.
“Commitments with the team mean I can’t make it this time, but I’ll be there next year.
“I’m sure dad and Howard will have a ball reliving old memories. To be honest, I’ve heard most of their stories and they’re very entertaining!”
