Castle Combe Racing Club delivers another successful Marshal Training Day at Castle Combe Circuit

The Castle Combe Racing Club Marshal Training Day holds legendary status, known as the premier safety training event of the year. It was highly disappointing that the day originally planned for the 4th of March had to be postponed due to inclement weather provided by the ‘Beast from the East’!

Luckily the circuit was able to oblige with a new date of Sunday 8th April. Attending this year were 92 officials and experienced marshals as well as 40 new recruits including those attending their first marshal event. Castle Combe Circuit and Wiltshire College provided use of their comprehensive facilities for the day.

The training day covered:

  • First Aid
  • First Marshal on Scene (FMOS)
  • Fire (including theory and practical sessions)

Thereafter sessions included:

  • MSA Incident Pack (new for 2018)
  • Flags
  • Communications
  • Start Line
  • Paddock / Assembly
  • Recovery / Breakdown

There was also a session to review the operations and facilities where an open discussion was invited. Steve Weston and Richard Beard hosted it with a view to establish an action plan on improvements to move safety and services for marshal’s forwards.

The new recruits had dedicated sessions that gave an overview of all of the above, with special emphasis of getting them involved, including rolling a car and practical firefighting. First time marshal, Gerald Howell commented ‘I have attended race meetings for many years and always admired what the marshals do. This year I thought I would get involved and what an eye opener it has been!’

The day concluded with a wrap up session in the Tavern Cafe. Initial feedback has been very positive and the club would like to thank the trainers who have been planning the event for the last few months. Head Marshal Richard Beard advised, ‘Once again the team delivered a fantastic day, but training and recruitment doesn’t just stop here! We are continually learning and developing processes to make sure that Castle Combe Racing Club and Circuit deliver the highest quality of marshals in the UK.'

It should be noted that these training days are funded by the club and subsidised by the MSA and British Motor Sport Training Trust.
