With 2017’s Motorcycle Grand National proving to be one of the largest events held at Castle Combe Circuit that entire year, organisers had a lot to live up to in making 2018’s instalment equally as memorable. But with a raft of spectacular racing as well as some of the most famous faces from the world of two wheels all making an appearance, it’s safe to say they there was nothing to be worried about!
Competitive action over this weekend-long double-header was once again seamlessly organised by NG Road Racing Club, meaning the Wiltshire circuit was never short of gripping competitive motorcycle racing with no less than 10 national series holding legs of their championships throughout.
This unsurprisingly gave the thousands of bike enthusiasts in attendance plenty to get excited about. But there was another equally-as-notable reason to raise pulses in the form of some of the most famous riders in the world of motorcycling being in attendance over the two days.
Saturday saw two veterans of the biking scene showing their faces: the USA’s triple World Championship-winning ‘Fast’ Freddie Spencer and British riding legend-turned-TV personality Steve Parrish, who were not only on-hand for chats and autographs but also hosted an intimate evening talk in the Strawford Centre with some very lucky fans present.
On Sunday, it was the turn of the contemporary stars – Ian Hutchinson, Leon Haslam, Tommy Bridewell and Peter Hickman – to make an appearance; all of whom were never too far away from awe-inspired groups of fans. Many of these riders could be also be found performing spectacular parade laps during the lunch break on some very special historic competitive machinery from over the years.
With former National Superstock icon Josh Day taking away more trophies than he could carry, including gold in the coveted Phoenix Open ‘King of Combe’ 10-lap spectacular held on the Sunday afternoon, it was undoubtedly a great weekend for local riders. This was bolstered with unfaltering podium finishes for TJ Toms – undoubtedly a Westcountry star of the future.
