A record of 33 new potential marshals signed on for the Castle Combe circuit’s annual ‘Marshal Training Day’ last Sunday 19 March. Budding and existing marshals practiced and developed a range of skills from first aid to fire fighting.
Richard Beard from Stockwood, the chief marshal at Castle Combe said, “The day was the culmination of an awful lot of planning by willing volunteers for the last 3 months. The CCRC Marshal Training Day was, in my opinion, very successful especially as we had 33 new trainees who rose to the challenges we set them. We also had a massive turn out of experienced marshals who fine-tuned their skills for the season ahead too.”
Just as it does with its spectator numbers, which exceed every other circuit in the UK for the type of events it runs, Castle Combe is also bucking the trend with its marshals.
Said Beard, “Apart from events such as the British GP, other circuits seem to struggle to recruit sufficient numbers. I guess when the spectator banks are full as they are here, it encourages people to become part of an atmospheric event. We are lucky to have as many people as we need, but we are always willing to talk to potential new recruits, as we are never complacent.”

The first time the Castle Combe marshals will be in action is at the opening ‘Howards Day’ race meeting on Easter Monday April 17.
